LOCKED DOWN 2020

KNIFE EDGE

After the first lock down the workshop became a refuge. I would cycle through the streets of London, disconcerted by the tension that charged them, yet on arrival I would quickly forget the complex situation that existed just outside our roller shutter. Most of the makers had little work to distract them, so they made the things they loved to pass the time. A couple of guys had set up ‘Knife Club’ and were slowly discovering the illusive secrets of Damascus steel. I was quickly seduced by the organic patterns within the steel and appreciated how it was indicative of the grain within timber.

Whilst moving between my home and the workshop I remained constantly engaged with how different the city felt. Undoubtedly informed by the activities of the workshop, my mental meanderings took me to the expression ‘sitting on a knife edge’. After musing this simple turn of phrase I was eager to make a piece that encapsulated its sentiment, thus I imagined a stool that incorporated Damascus steel and possessed a sharpness in its aesthetic.
